If you don’t know him by reputation alone then I’m surprised. No, before you ask, Rey Mysterio isn’t the Spiderman villain with the fogged-up space helmet. He’s a Mexican-American professional luchadore wrestler who currently works for Lucha Underground. He’s best known for the time he served as a participant in WWE from July 2002 until February 2015, where he became a three-time world champion.
Rey Mysterio – whose name in Spanish translates as “King Mystery” – was for many years known as something of an enigma in the wrestling scene. Like many other luchadores, he very rarely removed his mask, and even today there are only a few images available of the martial artist without it on.
In the early noughties the youthful Mexican powerhouse was a favourite of fans of professional wrestling, famed for his high flying style – which helped kick-start something of a cruiserweight wrestling phenomenon in the United States in the late 1990s during his time in WCW. To this day he’s regarded as one of the greatest high-flyers in wrestling history.
Although he was never exactly a skinny guy, Rey Mysterio was comparatively lean for a wrestler. But that was then, this is now – and things have changed. A certain image of the latino fighter has been doing the rounds on social media and the man looks totally different now. Check out page two to see for yourself.
